Volume 8:
Welcoming Newcomers: Teaching for Novice Philosophy Students
Edited By: Jake Wright
AAPT Studies in Pedagogy seeks very short (500-750) and especially useful contributions regarding the teaching of novice philosophy students. Modelled after the contemporary classic Angelo and Cross, Classroom Assessment Techniques and the eminently useful It Works for Me series by New Forum Press, we seek practical and informal manuscripts. This portion of volume 8 is a venue for philosophy teachers to share some of their good ideas with fellow philosophy teachers. Because of the shorter length of these pieces, we anticipate a quick turn-around of these peer-reviewed works.
Submission Deadline: Friday, Dec. 30, 2022
The focus of this volume is novice philosophy students or introductory level courses. We encourage authors to focus on one of the following questions, but are open to additional ideas:
- If an introductory course could contain only one learning objective, what should that objective be?
- Describe the most impactful assignment or class activity that is part of one of your introductory courses? Because it always helps students learn a lot, what is one of your “greatest hits” from intro.?
- What misunderstandings about philosophy are common barriers to novice philosophy students, and how do you help students overcome them?
- How do you make diversity, equity, and inclusion a forethought, not an afterthought, in your intro. courses?
Submissions should very briefly indicate the author’s teaching context: Position (graduate teaching assistant, full professor, adjunct, etc.), course (title, number of students, etc.), institutional context (R1, community college, etc.). A snappy, colloquial title is especially encouraged for these submissions. Submissions should be in MSWord and follow Chicago Manual of Style, vol. 17 formatting.
